Article ====> little animal

Hi, I would like to confirm this: I find out that a boy has hurt a little animal. I ask him:

1. Boy, why did you hurt a little animal?

2. Boy, why did you hurt the little animal?

In my example either one is fine, correct? It depends, how immediate is the animal for me?

In #1 (a little animal) I am shocked that he would hurt any small animal.

In #2 (the little animal) I am shocked that he would hurt THAT little animal.

About right? Thank you.
