Article in Front of Ringworm for Singularity

Ringworms are a fungal skin disease, so if it's okay to write, "a fungus," is it then also okay to write, "a ringworm" when referring to just one of these fungi?

Thanks.

I've always heard it as a non-countable. Ringworm is a fungal disease. I don't think the name of the fungus is also "ringworm", is it?
