Who wants to live to be a 100?

It cannot be denied that interest in the field of longevity has mushroomed in the last years. While many people believe that it is not the quantity but the quality of life that matters most, others are willing to drink an elixir of life to live as many years as possible. Why is it that people may want to reach the three digits or not?

Old age brings along physically and emotionally unstable conditions turning life into a matter of lasting rather than living. People would prefer dying to living through artificial lungs or being bedridden. Not only your body but also your mind may no longer remain sane and rational. As George Burns said: “First you forget names, then you forget faces. Next you forget to pull your zipper up and finally, you forget to pull it down.” Old people’s perspective about life changes as well. Apparently, the only thing they have to do every morning is to tie their shoelaces and wonder what else they can do.They look at themselves as a bother, thus, making them feel useless and depressed. Worst, however, are the feelings of loneliness and sadness which sweep over them after outliving all their siblings and friends.


On the flip side, the urge to live is very powerful. According to a recent poll, there is one reason which outweigh all the negative aspects that being a hundred raised: having the chance to meet your successive generations. The possibility to spoil your grand grandchildren seems like a bonus. Who would not like to live another decade and depart with fond memories and smiles?

To sum up, even though you have to wear adult diapers or depend on others help, it is worth being alive to appreciate the love of your beloved family. To hug and hum softly to your great grandchild until they fall asleep in your arms seems like a....... For sure, I would like to live to be a 100.
