Article before weather phenomena

Hi. Is this correct if I don't insert the definite article before "cold" and "snow".

During the march, the soldiers were exposed to cold and snow.

The cold and snow were not mentioned before. As they are uncountable, I don't use the article. Is this correct?
And would it be incorrect if I inserted it, even if not mentioned before?

Thank you.

You don't need the article, and if it was not mentioned before you should not include it.
