Article 'a' and 'control'

Hi,

I have a few questions regarding the following sentence:

"A recent work by Ben-Chen et al. [Ben-Chen:2009:VHM] introduced the Variational Harmonic Mapping (VHM) method, which alleviates the manual editing of the cage, and enables instead control with intuitive positional and rotational constraints. This allows for a more refined cages to bound the deformed object, and comfortable control to the user, similar to the Laplacian-based methods."

1. Concerning the two occurrences of the word 'control'. The article 'a' needs to be added before an indefinite countable noun. The first 'control' is uncountable so it doesn't need 'a', and the second doesn't seem to me countable either, but somehow it feels like I should add the 'a'. So should I?

2. "..allows for a more...". Here there should be an 'a' before more, since it relates to refined and not to cages, right?

Thanks,
Zohar

Both occurrences of "control" are clearly uncountable. I don't share your preference for an article in the second one. " I've never thought about it, but somehow this seems like an uncountable usage to me.

  • " Re 2, "cages" is of course countable and plural , and no article should be used.
  • "More refined" is just a modifier of cages.

Sometimes we say things like "This allows for a more comfortable control etc." I've never thought about it, but somehow this seems like an uncountable usage to me.

As an aside, note the infinitive "to bind the deformed object."

Thanks for settling my 'control' dilemma, and noticing my 'bound' typo (!).
Concerning the 'more', of course it relates to the cages, therefore there shouldn't be an aricle; what was I thinking...
