Article "a"

Dear teachers,

Although I'm not an advanced student, I would like to know what it means when they say "a" is used to indicate an instance of a noun.

For example:

I had a sudden moment of panic.

What is the actual purpose/function of the article "a" above?

Is it used to indicate the type/sort of that period of time which everybody else can experience in the future? (The emphasis is on the type or sort of thing)

Or Does it refer to a particular example/instance of moment that is exclusive and belongs only to me? In other words, this "a" refer to that particular period of time only in the past and it is gone.

(The emphasis is not on the type or sort of thing)

Thank you in advance.
