Article

In a flash of pure genius, she realized the answer to the problem.

In flash of pure genius, the answer came to her.

Both sentences were taken out of the Oxford advanced dictionary. I am asking why there is an indefinite article in front of the "first sentence" whilst the "second sentence" lacks one despite the fact that both are otherwise identical.
