May I know why "the" is used in The Empire State Building, The British Museum but not in Buckingham Palace, Cambridge University, Kennedy Airport, etc. Thank you.

This is a possible explanation, though there may be others.

Sometimes the modifying word (or words) is (or is regarded as) a description (i.e., British); sometimes the modifying word (or words) is (or is regarded as) a proper name in itself (Kennedy). How such determinations are made can seem very arbitrary, and we just have to memorize them.
