Today it is quite common in almost all parts of the country everyone is shockingly unreasonable and erratic on the road. When I see the way people ride their vehicles it tells me that they are absolutely indifferent to road discipline. No one is willing to wait even if it is their turn to wait and give way to others to move ahead. Thanks to the automatic traffic signals there is some order in the important intersections in major cities. But the condition in most of the other places is highly precarious. Due to this worrisome situation, on any given day, we have not less than five to six people being rushed to the trauma care centres in the nearby hospitals. Why is this condition? Who is to blame for this? In our country we are not unfamiliar with the statement when any social problem is talked about: "The government is not doing enough." How can people be so careless and insensitive to the role the state demands expects from every citizen? Do we not have an important duty towards the State to make its efforts easier and effective? The solution to not just the problem I have mentioned above, but to the most of the perils we encounter in our day to day life, lies in our hands. Rules are being laid only for the welfare of the whole the community, the society and the country, at large. But how many of us do we sincerely adhere to the road safety rules and comply with the regulations formulated by the law and order enforcing authority. We often tend to interpret the rules to our whims. The word ‘freedom' is grossly is misconstrued by us and its actually meaning is very often extended a little too far. Here I am reminded of what A G Gardiner has said people on the road having absolutely no concern for others. He opines that if everyone feels he or she has the freedom to move any way they like on the road, then there will be sheer anarchy. Let us remind ourselves that we are free to exercise our rights but while doing so let us bear in mind we are not causing even the slightest of discomfort to others.
