article

Can you check if all the articles are placed correctly? If not, can you tell me why they are not correctly placed?

Game:

I will choose one person to be "Volcano." When you hear the whistle sound, you should run and try to avoid being tagged by the "Volcano." If you are tagged, you become "Lake." "Lake" should try to make it harder for a person to go to the other side by doing whatever he/she can but can't move from the spot assigned to him/her. If you are tagged by a "Lake," then you must sit down at the very place you got tagged. The game will be finished when there is one person left.

Top answer

Omitting the article feels wrong to me (though slightly less wrong in the first sentence than elsewhere). I would use the "Volcano" and a "Lake" throughout.

Usually when we introduce a common noun into a conversation for the first time we use the indefinite article, then when we refer back to that item/person/etc. we use the definite.
There was a man. The man was eating an apple

Thank you. Why do you think Mr. Wordy and Huevos have answered it somewhat differently?

Hi Guys,
I agree with Feebs.

These are proper names. There is one Volcano, so I'd refer to the person as 'Volcano'. There are or will be several Lakes, so I'd say 'a Lake'.

The fact that these proper names are also the words for common nouns may be causing some confusion.

Best wishes, Clive

I note the other point of view, but I still prefer to use an article for "Volcano". To me, referring to a person as just "Volcano" makes it sound as if they're some kind of action hero -- like "Superman" or "Rambo", or something like that.
