We say 'a' when we are thinking of different kinds/fields of knowledge.

eg I have a good knowledge of English but a poor knowledge of Japanese.

The article tells the listener that the speaker is thinking in this way, of different knowledges, even if he just says 'I have a good knowledge of English'.
