Is article the required here?

Yes, It should be "soothed".

Once I was told that some nouns like "bed" or "hospital", "church" e.t.c do not take the article "the" but with some condition.

If bed is used for sleeping then we should not use article "the"

It's "go to bed", "be in bed", or "be on the bed".

The first two have to do with the bed as a place where you sleep or rest when you are ill, and so on.
The third one has to do with the bed merely as a piece of furniture.

If bed is used for sleeping then we should not use article "the" before the noun "bed" e.g

1. He was tired so he went to bed.>

We have many fixed expressions that do not need/use articles:

"go to bed" = sleep, rest.
