"It was as if he ___(1) able to disappear from the face of the earth, leaving no trace as to where he ___(2) gone.
1 seems to be 'had been'. But it says to put in one word only in each gap, and makes sence of "was". Could anyone please explain me when i put was and when had been after 'as if' in such expressions?
2 is had been i think.
Thanks.

(1) 'were' I think is called for here. (2) 'had' works here. PS: What's an atricle-- a gap?
