Technically, the spiky pieces on top of iron railings are called "finials". There are many designs, including arrowhead finials and spearhead finials. However, this is probably more information than you need. In everyday language they are just "spikes".

I like GPYs post, but only because I'll say that a finial needs to be a fairly decorative piece of work. A spike on some railing doesn't really do :-)

I agree that it has to be a bit fancier than merely a tapering to a point, but I was following from the original post that talked of "arrowheads". To my mind, there is no problem with an arrowhead design on top of a railing being called a "finial".
