Arrange (for) the natives to prepare materials while he went back to Aneityum.

Because of a lack of building materials, John Paton arranged for the natives to prepare materials while he went back to Aneityum.

Hi,

Is "for" after "arranged" in the above optional? If not, could you dig up a reason? Thanks.

No, the word "for" is not optional. Without it, it sounds as though he was physically moving natives and placing them in specific locations/positions.
