Aroused

Hello!

What does "aroused" mean in this context?

"In REM sleep, the brain is highy aroused".

I looked the word up in some dictionaries, but the answers I found there don't seem to fit, such as: "awakened", "excited" or "evoked".

Thank you

You can go with "active" or "excited." Just imagine all these neurons firing during REM. The brain is active during REM.

Although the body is paralyzed, the brain acts somewhat awake, with cerebral neurons firing with the same overall intensity as in wakefulness.
