Around and round

I am reading in a lot of books and articles the word round where it should be around. Did the rules change?

There are many song lyrics with something like this:

Round and round and round she goes.
Where she stops, nobody knows.

Anonymous the word round where it should be around.
There are a lot of expressions in which AmE has 'around' while BrE has just 'round'.
