What does 'around' in 'nervous around' mean? Is is the same as 'nervous about'?

In U.S. English, we usually say "I'm nervous around a person/place." "I'm nervous about something."

"I get nervous around pretty girls."

"I'm nervous about my job interview tomorrow."

Those both sound odd to me.

I believe that British English speakers use 'about' where we use around, but I am not positive on this point.

If you say "I get nervous about pretty girls." I would assume you mean the subject of pretty girls, not in the presence of them.

"I'm nervous around my job interview tomorrow." This sounds very wrong.
