Army Defector

Who is an army defector? I tried to find it in a dictionary but I haven't found anything.

Here is the example: Army defectors seized control of the town for a few hours.

Hi, It's like a deserter , ie one who illegally leaves the army. However, a deserter usually does not want to fight any more. A defector , on the other hand, sounds like someone who leaves the army to fight against it.
