You might wonder whether these beliefs are such a bad thing. We know

that they’re not true, but at least, you could argue, they emphasise the connections

between things, and make the world a more meaningful and colourful place

compared with the cold, mechanistic view of modern science.

--- I'm not sure how to understand "you could argue" here? Does "you" refer to the reader or to someone in general?

It refers to someone in general. It is 'impersonal you'. one could argue would work just as well.
