are/were

Hi all,

"I saw the man you were."

In this context, is it still acceptable to use "were" even though the person I am talking about has not changed since then? I used "were" because I used "saw", but now I'm wondering if "were" should be "are".

I take your meaning to be that you are saying to someone "I know who you were but you are no longer that
