are/is?

 I am not sure if we use "are" or "is" in these types of sentences:
Plural noun + verb be + singular noun.

For example, 

Newspapers is/are a powerful source of information. 

Normally I would put "are" after a plural noun, but in this case it doesn't feel right somehow.

You might be confusing "newspaper" and "news."

Newspapers (eg. The Telegraph, The New York Times, and the Washington Post) are a powerful source of information.
The news (eg. an item about the lack of finding the wreckage of flig
