Are you sure you don't...

I have posted a similar question under anonymous a few minutes ago before I joint.

This is the 10th year I lived in the US, and still trying to learn and fine tune my English.

However, I have been really bothered by how some questions are asked and answered.

I was asked yesterday "Are you sure you don't want to turn left here?"

I answered "Yes, I am sure." (meaning I don't want to turn left here)

I was told that I should have answered "No" instead...

Which way is correct?

" (meaning I don't want to turn left here) I was told that I should have answered "No" instead... I can't imagine why someone would say that. "Yes, I'm sure (that I don't want to turn left here)" is correct.
