Are you checking any luggage today?

In an airport:

Are you checking any luggage today?

Are you checking in any luggage today?

If it's in an airport, which of the above two makes more sense? Is it possible that both sound right but mean slightly different things?

I go to the appropriate airline's counter in order to check my luggage and receive my boarding pass. I might tell someone that I checked two suitcases when I checked in for my flight.

I don't think "checking in any luggage" is wrong, per se, but the "in any" is kind of awkward to say and, at least when I practice saying it, tends to get a bit muddled.
