Are vs were

Hi,

Which of these sentences are the correct ones:

A.1. The couple on the canvas are friends of my ancestor.
A.2. The couple on the canvas were friends of my ancestor.

B.1. The couple on the canvas are my ancestor.
B.2. The couple on the canvas were my ancestor.

My guess is A.1. & B.2.

Thanks, AL

I would go for the exact opposite, A2 and B1, but B1/2 should say "my ancestor s ". "in the painting" seems more likely than "on the canvas", assuming that is what is meant.

How about this:

A.The couple in the painting are my ancestors. They are William and Marry. They lived a century ago.
B.The couple in the painting were friends my ancestors. They are William and Marry. They lived a century ago.

Should I use were instead of are?
