'Are' vs 'Is'

Can anyone tell me why is some cases while mentioning team names we use 'are' instead of 'is'?
Ex- Manchester United are the richest club in football.

This phenomenon is mainly peculiar to British English. There is no special reason for it, I suppose. In the mid-19th century the British just began to use plural verbs when talking about football clubs etc.

In the mid-19th century the British just began to use plural verbs when talking about football clubs etc. because there are many players in them. A singular verb (is) is perfectly correct as well, of course.
