Context is always key.

"Hands up" is the first thing I thought of - like an old-fashioned bank robber. (Or "Stick 'em up!" like they say in the movies.)

I think the oddness comes from "put" instead of the more commmon (I think) "raise." If you were talking someone through a dance move or a stretch or even how to get into a yoga pose, I don't think you'd say "put your hands [som
