Are they suitable synomyms? (9-2)?

Hi teachers,
Could 'ran' and 'moved at a very fast speed' be suitable synomyms for 'raced' in the following sentence?
They raced out of the town.

Thanks in advance.

Were they really on foot? If I read that someone raced out of town, I would assume they were in a vehicle. "Got out of town very quickly" is the meaning.
