Are 'they,' 'some,' and 'others' correctly used in the sentences? Should there really be 'a' before 'total chaos'? Please enlighten me.

When Miss Thomas asked the students what would happen if human cloning was legalized, they kept quiet for a few seconds. Then, some of them noted that there would be a lot of difficulties in tracing an individual person’s identity. Others mentioned that there would be a total chaos in the society.
