Are they right? Can we say them?

Hi. Are they right? Can we say them?

1. This car is as expensive as any he can afford.
2. This car is as expensive as any.

If not, why can we say "He is as good a student as any in his class" or "He is as good as any in his class"?
Thank you.

Yes, they are correct.

But be careful when using such esoteric formulations, especially in casual conversations. They are stilted and formal, and people will think you are putting on airs.
