Your first sentence doesn't work as is: There are two students WHO participated in the research. Many will tell you that "that" is okay, but I'm one of the holdouts who says to use "who" with people whenever possible.

There are two students that/who participated in the research. OK.


As a matter of fact, I think that "have participated" would be a good alternative.
