Are these words okay without the hyphens after the verb forms 'to be'?

He is good looking.

My grandmother is old fashioned.

He is well thought of, well educated, well respected, and well mannered.

He is up to date.

The innovative software is state of the art.

The latest scientific technology is cutting edge.

The test 'consisted of / was / is' fill in the blank.

As far as I know, the hyphen is required when used before a noun. For example:

An old-fashioned person.
A cutting-edge computer.

However, when used after a noun we should write without hyphen:

A person that is old fashioned.
A computer that is cutting edge.

That is my understanding as well. However, I believe it has been a convention rather than a solid rule based on logic.
