Are these two sentences properly worded?

When the leader of Solanthus, General Erghas, eventually challenged Vinas to single combat, this was what Vinas’s soldiers thought would finally bring an end to the siege. During the duel, Erghas defeated Vinas through trickery, but this was unknown to the imperial commander.
