Are these two sentences grammatically correct? :)

1) For example, a great amount of people go to the gym, and a large number of these people go many times per week, devoting their lives to the pursuit of physical fitness.

2) In 1997, a 56-year-old woman, a year before she was to receive her pension, was fired from her job in San Jose, California.
