Could you please help me with my exercise ? I have to answer a few questions about Britain and the Britons. Do you agree with my answers ? There are also some questions I couldn't find an answer to. Help ! Thanks a lot. Chakinuoye.

1) the police don't carry guns TRUE - of that I'm absolutely sure.

2) you have to go to the bar in a pub to be served TRUE - same.

3) There's no 'priority to the left' on the roads FALSE - it's a mere question of logic;)

4) Military service lasts only 6 months ?????? No idea whatsoever.

5)It is not a welfare state. Sounds WRONG. We're no longer in the Thatcher era after all.

6) They eat dessert before cheese ??!! Must be WRONG. If it's not, well this should be forbidden;)

7) Shops are often open late in the evening. Humm... I'd say 50-50. In Bham city center, shops shut around 5pm. So it looks wrong. But maybe they're talking about shops such as Sainsbury's or Tesco, which close later in the evening, so it could be right. What do you think, guys?

8) Most people have milk delivered to their doorstep. Well... I'd say TRUE ?? because of the famous song 'no milk today'

9) You can't get married in church and in a registry office. If it's true I'd really love to know why!!

10) You don't have to pay on the motorway. - I don't remember paying on the motorway but I was in a bus; so after all, that was the driver's business, not mine;)

11)The police have installed video cameras at road junctions. I guess that's TRUE.

12) You have to pay for meals in a restaurant when you order. That can't be TRUE ???!!! Don't tell me...

13) You can only buy cigarettes in tobacconist's and pubs.- I don't remember seeing anyone buy cigarettes in a pub but maybe it's because I was too drunk;) I don't smoke, that's my excuse for not knowing;)

No, that's true.There is no priority to the left on roads (I'm not even sure what you mean by that).. Priority at roundabouts is to the right, at junctions the priority is with the larger road (and road markings and signs will tell you as well).

4) Military service lasts only 6 months ?????? No idea whatsoever. False. We don't have compulsary military service but if you choose to join up the usual term is 3 years.

5)It is not a welfare state. Sounds WRONG. We're no longer in the Thatcher era after all. Er that's hard. What do they mean by 'welfare state?' But Thatcher was anti-welfare by the way. Anyway, I suppose that is 'FALSE' as we do have a lot of welfare benefits available and free medical care, for example.

True but normally you have either a dessert OR cheese these days.

TRUE - most shopping centres are open to about 8pm or 9pm, a lot of small 'corner shops' are open late too, and all supermarkets are open till 9pm/10pm/11pm or many are now 24 hour. About the only shops that shut earlier are 'high street' ones, which will normally close around 6pm.

TRUE (there is now one pay motorway, an optional 'quick' route along one particular road, but that's an exception.)

11)The police have installed video cameras at road junctions. I guess that's TRUE. FALSE. There are lots of traffic cameras around but not specifically at junctions. There are some at junctions but also many not at junctions. Likewise, some junctions will have cameras but others won't.

12) You have to pay for meals in a restaurant when you order. That can't be TRUE ???!!! Don't tell me... FALSE. You pay after your meal.

13) You can only buy cigarettes in tobacconist's and pubs.- I don't remember seeing anyone buy cigarettes in a pub but maybe it's because I was too drunk

I don't smoke, that's my excuse for not knowing

. FALSE> I've never seen a pub selling them directly, although most have cigarette machines. But you can also buy them at supermarkets, petrol stations, for example.
