are these the right words used
Are the following the right words?
I would rather lose anything but that. [is 'but' the right word?]
Don't say thing you don't know about. [Is 'about' supposed to be there?]

First one is OK. 'Except' would also be OK instead of 'but'. Second sentence lacks necessary some words.

First one is OK. 'Except' would also be OK instead of 'but'.
