Are these Sentenses correct ?

1. While last year was generally good for properties in Malaysia, news of the credit crunch in the US which resulted from the sub prime mortgage crisis had become troubling by year-end.

2. He was angry because as a football player, he has never been substituted before.

Or "He is angry because as a football player, he has never been substiuted before.

Anything wrong with these sentenses ?
