Are these sentences OK?

The crowd is chanting Derek's name.

Later.

A few men at the front of the crowd struggle to keep the chant/chanting alive.

Later.

The chant/chanting has died out along with the hope of seeing Derek.

Are these sentence OK? Should it be "chant" or "chanting" in the second and third sentence?

Thank you in advance.
