Are these sentences natural to a native ear - 26 Feb 14

Hi,
Are these sentences natural to a native ear?
  1. The reason I asked was because I think I am coming down with a cold.
  2. I promise not to get in your way.
  3. How did it turn mute? ( I was talking about a TV that was on mute).
Thanks,
MG

1 and 2 look fine to me.

For 3, I'd probably say "How did it get muted?" or, since the answer is obvious..."Who muted it?"

Hi Musicgold,

the first and second are fine, the third depends on what you are asking. If it is a general question about how to mute the TV you can say 'how do you mute it?'. If you want to know, in that specific instance, how the sound got turned off, you could say 'how did you mute it?

Best wishes,

"The reason is/was because" may sound natural to many native ears because it is used so often, but most style manuals advise against it, preferring "The reason is/was that".
