I suppose John's suggest is more likely to be used. I can think of situations when I might say a Thursday in this context, but if you omitted the a you would never be wrong.
They have the same meaning but may used differently. 2 - Something happens on Thursdays as a routine and either hasn't happened or someone is talking about the routine that happens on Thursdays but not as though it is happening today. 2a+b - Somebody acts like it isn't Thursday or says that its a different day. Or you believe it to be Thursday and get corrected.
