Hi,

Are the following sentences natural to a native ear?

1. We place high probabilities on the first two.



2. The state is showing reasonable growth of 3% after two years of decline.



3. They are able to do this without adding to the/ a headcount.

The first is OK, but what it's actually about seems a little vague, so it may need to be changed depending on context.

Which one of the following sentences sounds more natural?

1a. We place high probabilities on the first two.

1b. We place a high probability on the first two.

Strange to say, I was thinking the same thing when evaluated the first one earlier in the thread. I was thinking that maybe the second version was better. It seems to me that if I were writing it, I would be more likely to write the second one, so I suppose that's a reason to believe the second one is more natural. At the same time, I can't see anything really wrong with the first one either.
