According to Thomas Hobbes man when not under pressure from some higher power than him, is inherently distrustful and afraid of others. This distrust is also strengthen by an aggression resulting from his nature. He believes that all people are guided by the same desire to harm others. This desire may ensue from different features and motivations such as false estimation of their potency, the need to defend their property or liberty,  pride, desire of power, rivalry and suspicion. Conforming to Hobbes, man in the natural state is precisely characterized by all the above features.

Hobbes is convinced that apprehension about ignorance of reasons, which has always accompanied man, entails finding some idea, which would clarify those reasons. In this way, man creates a vague power, or an invisible factor. Situation is different to the one Eternal ***. “Gods were at first created by human fear: which, spoken of the gods (that is to say, of the many gods of the Gentiles), is very true. But the acknowledging of one *** eternal, infinite, and omnipotent may more easily be derived from the desire” Thus, Hobbes wants to distinguish the essence of Christianity from paganism. He believes that the state of war in which man is, does not allow him to know *** the Eternal, because he lives in a constant concern about his fate that does not let him devote himself to study the reasons. This, in turn, causes that he imagines as many gods as he wishes. This is that particular moment of transition from war to the Commonwealth. It also allows to find and recognize the Christians’ ***.

Hobbes creates a distinction, between these two kinds of religion, based on four factors that he considers are causes of religion. They are: belief in ghosts, ignorance of the distant, initial reasons, submissiveness to what a man is afraid of, and taking random things as a foresight. These things are for him the seed from which religion is born. The first religion was made, using these four factors by people, who nurtured and shaped them according to their own intentions. The second religion was shaped as a ***’s order. It should be noted, however, that: “But both sorts have done it with a purpose to make those men that relied on them the more apt to obedience, laws, peace, charity, and civil society." By that fact itself, creation of religion has created the opportunity of maintaining people in check. It was one of the elements that prevented a man from disobedience. Hobbes also adds that man is willing to use the apprehension of others, by stoking fear among them as one of the elements of an effective fight.
