1) I went by a car. Correct. You were walking or biking on the sidewalk, and you passed by a car that was parked by the curb.
2)I went by car. Correct. You got inside a car and you or someone else drove the car to your destination.
3) I went by the car. Correct. This is the same as #1 above, except the car is one that is known to you and the reader.
