1) I don't want to put a dent in his finances.
2) I don't want to put a strain on his income.
3) I don't want to be a strain on his income.

1 means I don't want to spend so much of his money, 2 and 3 roughly mean I don't want to burden him financially by needing his money on a regular basis, right?
