Are these sentences correct?

Please could you let me know if these two sentences are correct?
My mother gave him some money to take with him. He bought many things when he was there.

Do I need a comma before 'when' and is 'to take with him' grammatically correct?

Excellent work. (Use a comma only if the adverbial clause comes first: When he was there, he bought many things.)
