Are these sentences all worded in the best way?

Three days after Breyhard and his army crossed the Dalti River, the fifty hordes under his command were poised on the Dalti’s floodplain, ready to attack the bakali. However, since the brisk fight at the crossing, there had been no sign of the lizard-men. The other fifty-eight hordes of the Ergothian army were waiting on the opposite shore of the river under the command of General Crumont, and would cross the river and take the enemy in the flank when the bakali were discovered. Breyhard ordered Crumont’s force to begin the river crossing farther south while his hordes would begin the search for the bakali. However, at that time, the bakali, who had buried themselves in the river bottoms, emerged throughout the Ergothian ranks and brutal fighting commenced.
