Are these sentences all worded in the best way?

After the slaughter of the Tarsan mercenaries, a council of war was held in Daltigoth to determine a course of action against the unknown force. During the council, Tol volunteered to lead three hundred of the Daltigoth foot soldiers to Hylo to discover who had attacked Tylocost’s army and if it was a threat to the empire. Many of the warlords thought that Tol was insane to suggest such an idea and were against it, but Pakin III overruled them and ordered that Tol be allowed to journey to Hylo. The night before Tol and his soldiers left Daltigoth, the young lord and Valaran met at their usual meeting place in the Wizard’s College.
