Are these prepositional phrases verb complements here

Hi: I have another confusion, please.

Would anyone of you please tell me what the grammatical function of the prepositional phrases is in the following sentences?

- She enjoyed the washing of the car.

-They reading of the book saddened her.

Are they verb complements or noun complements there?

Top answer

Those are not natural sentences, and the second one is ungrammatical with "they". Why do you want to say " She enjoyed the washing of the car ", when we would more naturally say "She enjoyed washing the car"?
