"skin" is presumably a metaphor for "inner personality" or something similar, with the whole thing meaning something like "get inside Jem's personality" or "understand what it's like to be Jem". As far as the second is concerned, more context is needed. It's hard to tell what it's describing and in what way it might be non-literal.

"skin" is presumably a metaphor for "inner personality" or something similar, with the whole thing meaning something like "get inside Jem's personality" or "understand what it's like to be Jem".

I am inclined to think "skin" is representing Jem's circumstances. Much like when we say walking a mile in someone's shoes.
