Are these good questions and answers for the text?

Hi teachers,
Context:
Thank you, doctor,’ he said, in his strange slow voice. ‘But it’s not important. Everyone laughs at me. I understand that.’

Assuming that we know that 'he' is 'Joseph Merrick', Would these be good questions and answers for the text?
1a. Was Merrick understanding about people making fun of him? Yes, he was.
1b. Was Merrick understanding about people teasing him? Yes, he was.

Thanks in advance.

No; it heads a participial phrase. It is a noun here: He accepted people's teasing him.
